Phew!  What a journey!  Yet, what joy it is to see in Haidee's FB page that Rocky's enjoying the toy cars that have a journeyed thousands of kilometers just to get to him. As one of your constituents in Paranaque, and as an OFW, I just would like to raise an issue that is close to my heart: the topic of placement fees charged by recruitment agencies. I have been encouraging fellow OFWs in forums and meet-ups that we should not patronize agencies that charge recruitment fees.  Then again, the information drive is sadly not big enough. The only way I see things change is if Congress will get its act together and serve the OFWs and force agencies not to charge placement or processing fees. If you would take some time to research all the labor cases handled by the POEA, I am sure you will discover that most of these disputes involve an agency that has charged a form of placement fee on candidate OFWs. As a young one in faith then, I was also confused by what seems back then as a contradiction - God's love and hell.  Well, it didn't take me too long to figure out where do we balance the idea that God wants all men to be saved with the concept of hell. We read in 1 Timothy 2:3-4 that "This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth." There's no argument that we are called to forgive unceasingly those who have sinned against us.  Jesus answered Peter in Matthew 18:21-22 that we should forgive our brother not just seven times, but seventy-seven times!  Meaning we should live a lifestyle of forgiveness. But then, how do you strike a balance with the idea of forgiving everyone who sinned against you, while standing up against evil in this world?  Romans 12:9 calls us to hate what is evil and cling to what is good.  In other words, how do you live a lifestyle of forgiveness while not tolerating evil or making moral judgments? You take a look at world's major religions and one of the common things they would share is the pursuit of righteousness.  There seems to be a shared core value among humans that righteousness just feels... uhm, right. When one asks why righteousness, we can safely say that the major theistic faiths believe in a righteous God.  For Christians, we pursue righteousness because we know that we were made in God's image - as righteous that He is, so must we - and it is according to His standards that we understand whether we are righteous or not.  However, over the years as I have been walking with the Lord, I have seen some crazy ideas how we will be considered righteous or not - and sadly there were times when I fell for these. I cringe at the thought today that I used to watch those preachings every morning before going to work.  It took a good look into Scripture for my eyes to be opened on this. But there are times when preachers and exhorters miss the point. When I first attended church, back in high school, I remember there were instances when I would hear the preaching, and it would move from striking my heart to one that would put me down and condemn me. Maybe it was because I was religious back then, or it could really be that legalism has overshadowed my desire to know God more. What I know was that I wasn't up for the standards that God wants - which sadly is only half of what the Bible says. Apparently, there is the Gospel.
