The Parable of the Bad GM and the Best President

What if you owned a company and you hired a General Manager, and the said person in the first four years somewhat showed to be trustworthy. He worked hard and initiated grand projects. From being #2 in the industry and one of the most respected brands, there was a promise you might be #1 in no time.

Then on the fifth year the General Manager's true colors started showing. Instead of upholding best corporate practices, he began some dire policy changes. In place of hiring the qualified mid-level managers, he began putting his inexperienced friends and relatives into key positions. Instead of getting from reputable suppliers, he gave sub-contracts to companies owned by his in-laws and cousins. There were arbitrary firings of long-time employees, and the company's books are seeing more red figures as the GM removed the standard checks and balances when it comes to the finances.

To make things worse, instead of focusing on selling the company's product...

Inaanak gets his gifts / God's love over the distance

Our inaanak (godson), Rocky, finally received the other day some gifts from his grandparents. The toy cars and goodies made its way from Riyadh to Dammam, back to Riyadh, then twice back and forth, then onwards to Manila, then finally Bahrain - and passing through numerous of hands! Phew! What a journey! Yet, what joy it is to see in Haidee's FB page that Rocky's enjoying the toy cars that have a journeyed thousands of kilometers just to get to him.

I am just reminded by this story of Romans 8:38-39, "And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord."

Rocky may not appreciate it today, but if he had known how...

9/11 and the Big Picture

Talking about 9/11 and our current world order is probably one of the most highly politicized issue. Everyone have their own opinions, and everyone thinks his opinion is valid. I've watched, read, and heard these arguments - sadly, a lot of them have only focused on one point or have held on to rhetoric.

10 years ago I was in Riversdale, New Zealand, doing my time with YWAM. I would say that this season of my life was indeed the turning point for me. For one, it was the beginning of my walk with the Lord, and second the world of 9/12 has turned a big corner on the road of history.

This morning I woke up to a post in Facebook, where I read a friend commemorated the victims of 9/11, and his friend commented saying that it was all about oil. Comments like this has really ticked me off, considering they are mainly illogical and overarching a sentiment. Rather than remembering those who have perished, the issue was politicized.

The idea I want to lay down h...

TraPos or Traditional Politicians are those that have held the country hostage since the American times.

How does one identify them? Here's my take, on "You know you are a TraPo if..."

You ran for office under the name of your father, or grandfather, promising change, but have not made any paradigm shift in local governance.

You hate transparency and good governance.

You have cronies whom you owe political debt.

You practice political padrino system. You win the loyalty of your Barangay officials, and then when you win, you shower them with favor. They in turn return the favor by promising to deliver the votes.

The padrino system also goes upwards, because you promise the governor and the congressman to deliver the votes during elections, and expect them to return the favor by showering your LGU with part of their Pork Barrel.

You have shifted party colors every election. You have no solid political conviction.

If you are a legislator, you are busy re...

Open Letter to Cong. Roilo Golez on Placement Fees of Recruitment Agencies

Dear Cong. Golez,

I hope you are well.

As one of your constituents in Paranaque, and as an OFW, I just would like to raise an issue that is close to my heart: the topic of placement fees charged by recruitment agencies.

I have been encouraging fellow OFWs in forums and meet-ups that we should not patronize agencies that charge recruitment fees. Then again, the information drive is sadly not big enough.

The only way I see things change is if Congress will get its act together and serve the OFWs and force agencies not to charge placement or processing fees.

If you would take some time to research all the labor cases handled by the POEA, I am sure you will discover that most of these disputes involve an agency that has charged a form of placement fee on candidate OFWs.

Philippine Daily Inquirer in fact came out with an article today quoting the POEA “Charging excessive fees and misrepresentation topped the list of violations committed by various recruitment agencies in the country.”

Plac...

The Sad Saga of our Coconut Farmers

What if the GMA government declared that 50% of your income will be levied and collected into a trust fund, and that the said fund would be used to develop employment programs in the Philippines? More to this, your direct benefit would be that you will be a shareholder in the said trust fund. Yet, when the end came, news broke out that GMA and her economic henchmen stashed the money somewhere in the Cayman Islands, and used the funds for personal profit. How would you feel? I am sure you would consider GMA and her cohorts as Enemies #1 of the Philippines.

Sadly, this actually already happened four decades back when Ferdinand Marcos, Juan Ponce Enrile, and Danding Cojuangco duped millions of Filipino farmers through the Coco Levy Fund.

With last month's Supreme Court decision favoring Danding Cojuangco, "that the block of shares in San Miguel Corp. in the names of respondent Cojuangco et al is the exclusive property of Cojuangco et al" you can...

Reflecting on the Great Rescue

I must confess, that I cried watching the video of the rescue of the 33 miners in Chile. I cried not only because of the human drama, and not only because of God's faithfulness to those miners, but I cried because I was reminded of what it means to be rescued.

As I was fixed on the events unfolding in front of my eyes, God just reminded me that at one point I too was trapped. I was in the deepest depths of my sin. I was good as dead. But, God in his unfathomable love, sent his only Begotten Son, Jesus Christ, to pay the penalty for my sin, to die the death I should have died, and give me the new life I did not deserve.

I also saw a picture of what it would be like for some of us one day after we draw our last mortal breath. In a blink of an eye, we will face our Lord, and around to welcome us home are those men and women who have labored in prayers, in time, in love - people who have been faithful and who have been used by our God to usher us in...

Does God really want all men to be saved?

Years back, when I was going through my DTS in YWAM in New Zealand, one of my classmates engaged our teacher to a very emotional debate. This roommate of mine said that he cannot come to terms with the goodness of God and Hell. He explained his position that he believes that at the end of time, all men will still go to heaven. This is what I later came to know as Christian Universalism.

As a young one in faith then, I was also confused by what seems back then as a contradiction - God's love and hell. Well, it didn't take me too long to figure out where do we balance the idea that God wants all men to be saved with the concept of hell.

We read in 1 Timothy 2:3-4 that "This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth."

One really has to understand that we cannot take one verse by itself and make a theological conclusion. As I always share to my friends, when unpacking a verse, make sure to repack it...

My new blog: Unang Panahon... This Day in History

I guess you all know that I am just a history freak. Yes, my wifey even calls me a geek all the time. I can't blame her. I even tell that myself.

Anyway, I started a new blog which documents the significant event of that date to our history. I try to connect it particularly to Philippine History.

Here's my first entry in Unang Panahon...
Forgiving vs. Tolerating Evil

I just received an interesting response in my previous blog, questioning my intention and reminding me that we as Christians we should not judge, and that we are called to forgive those who have sinned against us.

There's no argument that we are called to forgive unceasingly those who have sinned against us. Jesus answered Peter in Matthew 18:21-22 that we should forgive our brother not just seven times, but seventy-seven times! Meaning we should live a lifestyle of forgiveness.

But then, how do you strike a balance with the idea of forgiving everyone who sinned against you, while standing up against evil in this world? Romans 12:9 calls us to hate what is evil and cling to what is good. In other words, how do you live a lifestyle of forgiveness while not tolerating evil or making moral judgments?

As Christians, should we tell the Jews to forget the past, forget the Holocaust, and understand what the Nazi Party had to do in their time and political condition?...

When Ferdinand Marcos heard "Aloha!"

Have you ever asked what happened in the first few days when Pres. Ferdinand Marcos arrived in Hawaii after the EDSA Revolution?

I mean, do you think Marcos and his party just boarded a plane in Clark Air Base on that fateful February night in 1986, got to Honolulu and passed through the US Immigration without a question?

The truth is far from this.

It's interesting to read in an LA Times article on February 28, 1986, a few days into Marcos' exile, the US State Department and the White House did not know what to make of the newly exiled Filipino President. No one in the US Government really has a playbook on what to do with a controversial former foreign head of state who is given refuge on American soil. One State Department official confided "It looks like we're stuck with him."

The administration of US President Ronald Reagan wanted to accommodate a friend, and at the same time a fledgling new government in Manila that has caught the attention of the internat...

Knowing our Political History

Call it historical amnesia or what, but I really believe that this generation of Filipinos forget our history as quick as the dew evaporates under the morning sun.

Aside from military history and church history, one of my fascination is our country's political history. Reading on our government's story is walking down the path where our leaders have threaded, and see the clear picture of why we are where we are right now.

Have you ever asked why we have pushed for Filipino as a medium of instruction in our schools?

Have you ever wondered why we do not have a developed oil industry?

Have you ever queried why the some 180 traditional political (TraPo) families keep on getting elected in local and national government positions?

If you read back our history, you will understand, and you will know better whom to vote in the next elections.

False Righteousness vs. Real Righteousness

Gal 2:21 I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!"

You take a look at world's major religions and one of the common things they would share is the pursuit of righteousness. There seems to be a shared core value among humans that righteousness just feels... uhm, right.

When one asks why righteousness, we can safely say that the major theistic faiths believe in a righteous God.

For Christians, we pursue righteousness because we know that we were made in God's image - as righteous that He is, so must we - and it is according to His standards that we understand whether we are righteous or not. However, over the years as I have been walking with the Lord, I have seen some crazy ideas how we will be considered righteous or not - and sadly there were times when I fell for these.

So I ask, what is real righteousness? And, what is false righteousness? Let me start with the latter... ...

"The Bible is man-made, so I don't believe it."

I had this interesting conversation in a forum with a skeptic, which went something like this (in Filipino though):

Skeptic: The Bible is man-made, therefore I don't believe its true.

Karlo: Oh really? So, tell me is this post of yours man-made or not?

Skeptic: Ok, I didn't think of it that way.

Sometimes it is really interesting when I encounter objections made by people regarding the Bible which actually contradict their very own argument. I always suggest in such cases for people to take the time to read the Bible objectively, study its history, and take the books according to its context.

Sadly, most have already prejudged the Bible without reading it from cover to cover. Talk about do not judge a book by its cover.

It's even ironic when I test skeptics on their judgment whether a judge is a fair judge if he has sentenced a suspect to the maximum penalty without even giving the suspect's case a thorough and objective review. Obviously they say "no." I ...

10 Reasons why you should visit the Philippines

I've got heaps of friends from all over, but sadly not many of them have visited our country. Well, here are at least 10 reasons why you guys should go and see the Pearl of the Orient:

1. Palawan. If you love adventure and nature, Palawan is the place to go.

2. Boracay. The island that has it all for anyone who loves the beach and party.

3. Bohol. This may be a small province, but drive for about 45 minutes, and you would be covering at least 5 sights and experiences - from white sand beaches, to Chocolate Hills and the Philippine Tarsier.

4. Caramoan Peninsula. Its one of Luzon Island's last frontier - a little Palawan of sorts. Limestone cliffs, and dotted islands offshore.

5. Ilocos Region. A drive to Ilocos is like a drive back to Spanish Philippines.

6. Cebu. When I think of Cebu, the first thing that pops in my mind is food.

7. Puerto Galera. The Verde Passage is noted as one of the highest biodiversity regions i...

Healthy & Wealthy Christians?

It only took me 6 months to stop watching Christian TV programs after getting my satellite cable, and I have to thank all those preachers who taught that being a Christian means you must have health and wealth in abundance.

I cringe at the thought today that I used to watch those preachings every morning before going to work.

It took a good look into Scripture for my eyes to be opened on this.

The truth is even if you are in the Jesus Team, it does not automatically mean your life will be problem-free and prosperity will come your way. In my walk with Christ, I have seen brothers and sisters in the faith who faced trials which seem to be at the opposite end of the spectrum of a good life and wealth. I myself even spent a week in prison despite serving the Lord in this place.

If we consider John the Baptist, Jesus said that among those who walked this Earth, no one is greater than John the Baptist. Yet we read in Matthew 14 that John was beheaded, not even on ...

The Father Heart of Our God

When I think of how God has taken great lengths to rescue me and turn my life around, I can't help but be in awe and even at times cry at the goodness I have in him as my Savior. But more than this, God is indeed my Good Father who takes great effort to show his love to a prodigal child, and win him back.

In one of the scenes of the movie Blood Diamond, the protagonist Solomon Vendy has finally come face to face with his son, Dia, but instead of seeing his son run with open arms towards him, the boy raises a gun against his very own father.

In the same way, we may have raised our hate or anger towards the Lord, but then God takes us aside and reminds us of who we really are. We are his children, created in his image, purchased by the precious blood of his one and Begotten Son, Jesus Christ. He is our Father who loves us that he is willing to give it all for us.

The world may have brainwashed us to thinking otherwise, but His Word remains true - that He loves us so much that...

Legalism Hurts / Gospel Heals

I believe when preachers get up the pulpit, they really mean well.

But there are times when preachers and exhorters miss the point.

When I first attended church, back in high school, I remember there were instances when I would hear the preaching, and it would move from striking my heart to one that would put me down and condemn me.

Maybe it was because I was religious back then, or it could really be that legalism has overshadowed my desire to know God more. What I know was that I wasn't up for the standards that God wants - which sadly is only half of what the Bible says. Apparently, there is the Gospel.

This portion of Matt Chandler's preaching reminded me of that experience.

The truth is that religion or religiosity only results into two things:

1. Pride
2. Depression, Frustration, & Condemnation

For those who think they are good enough, it's pride that rules over their hearts. It could be religious pride, or unregenerate pride. Religious pride is w...
